Robert John McClure 1850-53
The Northwest Passage 4
In the course of the unsuccessful quest for Franklin’s ships in which no survivor had been found, now ultimately the entire North American Arctic region could be measured. Even McClure’s first trip through the North-West-Passage was the result of this search. McClure searched after Franklin starting from the Bering Street. When his ship was frozen in the Prince of Wales Street and had not even been freed after three winters, he found happiness in an arriving sled expedition from the East with which he could escape from the ice. Thus he was the first who crossed the whole passage.
