James Clark Ross 1840-43

The Antarctic 4

Few survived as much hibernations in the polar waters as James Clark Ross did – namely eight. He took part in four different arctic expeditions with his uncle John Ross and Edward Parry. Among other things he discovered the magnetic North pole. On his expedition to the Antarctic – on the same ships which would lead Franklin to ruin – he discovered the only point where a Southern advance was relatively safe. Through the Ross Sea and the Ross Ice Shelf the conquest of the South Pole succeeded.
