John Franklin 1819-21 1845-47

The Northwest Passage 3

The legends surrounding Franklin are due mainly to the unique search after his lost last expedition, lasting for decades. His more important travels were on land. On two long trips with the sleigh he explored North Canada and mapped the American Polar coast, so that in the end of the 1820s one had a rough picture of the coastline. In 1845, almost at the age of 60, he went out again with the ships “Terror” and “Erebus” in order to defeat the passage but he failed catastrophically.
