Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen 1820-22
The Antarctic 2
Besides the search of the North-West-Passage and with the end of the Napoleonic wars, Antarctic research came into vogue. In addition to England now also Russia joined in (in the course of the century many other countries would follow). The first scientific expedition to the South polar sea took place under the command of Bellinghausen. Bellinghausen circled the continent and pushed out to the polar circle about six times. He was probably the first one who besides some upstream islands also sighted the Southern mainland.
