Robert Falcon Scott 1912
The Southpole 4
With the disastrous course of Scott's South Pole expedition in 1912, the classic polar research ends. Even Scott used snowmobiles but they were still poorly conceived and not useful. Ponies turned out to be unusable as well and Scott, just like Shackleton, had to accomplish the march primarily on his own. Furthermore, the weather conditions complicated the track - Amundsen could leave much earlier. Therefore the trip was doomed to failure. They reached the pole but none of the participants survived the return journey to the camp.
