Carsten Egebert Borchgrevink 1895
The Southpole 1
It took another 50 years until there were further scientific attempts to explore the Antarctic continent after James Clark Ross. By then sailing the South Polar Seas was again subject to the whalers. Significantly it was a whaler on which Borchgrevink, a young Norwegian scholar, travelled to Antarctica. After sighting the land, he begged the captain to give him a boat so he could enter the land. The captain caved in and therefore made Borchgrevink the first scientist on the Antarctic mainland.
