Frederik Albert Cook 1908

The Northpole 3

The conquest of the North Pole became a race. But in cause of the ice and adverse weather conditions all attempts failed. Almost unnoticed by the public, in 1908 the American doctor F.A. Cook made his advance to the pole which he probably reached at 21st April. Cook had already participated in several Arctic voyages (two of them with his future opponent Peary). However, the return voyage turned out to be difficult and enforced one more hibernation. That is why Cook could not talk about his triumph until 1909, only few days before Peary.
