Roald Amundsen 1911

The Southpole 3

Amundsen is the most successful of all polar explorers. Among other things he was the first to pass through the long-sought Northwest Passage. However, his main goal, the North Pole, he could never reach. Just after he had prepared the cost-intensive expedition to the North Pole, the news of Peary's conquest of the North Pole spoiled all his plans. He had to rethink and decided to travel to the South instead, knowing that he would encounter with Scott there. Literally forced to succeed, he marched through to the pole, which he reached on 12/15/1911.
