Fridtjof Nansen 1893-96
The Northpole 2
Nansen, the shining light of the polar drivers, did not only reach all his goals during his expeditions, later he also acted very carefully as a politician – with commitment and with fortune which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. His legendary expedition with his ship “Fram” proved that there is no open polar sea ice drift and that there is an ice drift between the Pacific to the Atlantic. Nansen allowed his ship to freeze in the North Siberian Sea on purpose. It was carried to the Atlantic within four years. He left the ship after three years in order to reach the North Pole on foot, but barely failed.
